Japan winter light
Discover Japan in winter through photography, from the vibrant streets of Tokyo to the snow-covered landscapes of Hokkaido.
Join us for an immersive photographic journey, exploring Japan’s light, landscapes, architecture and atmosphere together.
This workshop will be conducted entirely in French.
A different Japan
With fewer crowds, crisp light and landscapes shaped by snow and cold, the country reveals a quieter, more graphic and atmospheric side.
From the energy of Tokyo to the slopes of Mount Fuji, the historic streets of Matsumoto and the vast winter landscapes of Hokkaido, this journey brings together some of Japan's most diverse photographic environments.
Over ten days, we will travel, explore and photograph together — taking the time to observe the light, refine compositions and create images that go beyond the usual postcard view of Japan.
This photographic journey is organised in partnership with Horizon Photo and will be led in Japan by photographer Nicolas Wauters, based in Tokyo since 2013.
THE PLACES WE WILL EXPLORE
From the energy of Tokyo to the silence of Hokkaido, discover some of Japan's most fascinating winter landscapes and cities.
Tokyo : Urban energy, architecture & night photography
Mount-Fuji : Winter landscapes & iconic views
Matsumoto : Historic architecture & Japanese heritage
Biei : Snow-covered landscapes, minimalism & light
Sapporo : Winter cityscapes & northern atmosphere
Five destinations. Ten days. One photographic journey through winter Japan.
THE PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPERIENCE
This workshop is designed for photographers who want to experience and discover Japan through their camera, while developing their own photographic approach.
Throughout the journey, Nicolas Wauters and Joeffrey Sohi will accompany you in the field, sharing their experience and providing practical guidance adapted to each participant.
We will explore Japan through its cities, architecture, landscapes and winter atmosphere, while working with the light and conditions available on the day. Together, we will explore different approaches to composition and take the time to refine each image. Depending on the location and the conditions, sessions may include sunrise, daytime, blue hour and night photography.
The emphasis is not on following a rigid photographic formula, but on combining the experience of discovering Japan with the opportunity to grow as a photographer — learning to see differently, anticipate the light and create more intentional images.
WORKSHOP IN PRACTICE
LIGHT & ATMOSPHERE
Understanding and working with the changing light of winter, from early morning to golden hour, blue hour and night. We will learn to recognise how light, weather and atmosphere can transform a scene and use them to create more compelling images.
JAPAN
Discovering Japan beyond the camera, with Nicolas Wauters, who has been living and guiding in Japan since 2013. From Tokyo's neighbourhoods and architecture to traditional culture and winter landscapes, experience Japan through the eyes of someone who knows it from the inside.
URBAN & LANDSCAPE
Working across two very different photographic environments, from the dense urban landscapes of Tokyo and Sapporo to the open winter scenery of Mount Fuji and Biei. We will explore different approaches to cityscapes, architecture, landscape and minimalist photography.
TECHNIQUES
Throughout the journey, we will explore a range of techniques that can help expand your photographic possibilities. Depending on the location and conditions, this may include astrophotography, long exposures, exposure blending, time blending, focus stacking and other creative approaches.
COMPOSITION & VISION
Exploring perspective, focal length, geometry, balance and negative space to build stronger and more intentional compositions. The aim is to develop your own way of seeing rather than simply reproducing familiar views.
IMAGE REVIEW & GUIDANCE
Regular opportunities to review your images, discuss compositions and exchange ideas with Nicolas and Joeffrey. These sessions will help you understand your strengths, identify areas for improvement and progressively refine your photographic approach throughout the journey.
THE 10 DAY JOURNEY
Ten days, five destinations and a constantly changing photographic environment.
-
Our journey begins in Tokyo, where we will spend three days discovering and photographing the many faces of Japan’s capital.
After arriving and settling into the city, we will explore Tokyo through its urban landscapes, architecture and street life. From dense neighbourhoods and striking cityscapes to the constantly changing Tokyo skyline, each environment will offer new opportunities to observe, compose and photograph.
These first days will also be an opportunity to experiment with different photographic techniques and approaches, working with the changing light from day to blue hour and into the night.
Three days to discover Tokyo, find your own perspective and begin the journey through winter Japan.
-
Our journey continues as we leave Tokyo and travel by car towards Kawaguchiko and the Mount Fuji region.
As the urban landscape gradually gives way to mountains and open spaces, we will begin exploring the winter scenery around Japan’s most iconic peak. Depending on weather and visibility, we will look for different perspectives of Mount Fuji and work with the changing winter light to create atmospheric landscape images.
From the energy of Tokyo to the quiet landscapes around Mount Fuji, the journey begins to reveal another side of winter Japan.
-
Leaving Mount Fuji behind, we continue by car towards Matsumoto, a city where Japanese heritage and winter landscapes meet.
Depending on the morning light and weather conditions, we will have another opportunity to photograph Mount Fuji before heading towards the Japanese Alps. In Matsumoto, we will explore the historic centre and photograph the iconic castle, particularly as the light begins to soften towards the end of the day.
The following morning, we will continue photographing Matsumoto before taking a domestic flight towards Hokkaido, marking the transition from central Japan to the northern landscapes of the journey.
-
After flying from Matsumoto, we will land in Chitose, the gateway to Hokkaido. From there, we will begin our journey north towards Biei, travelling through the winter landscapes of the island.
Rather than heading directly to Biei, we will spend a night along the route, allowing us to begin photographing Hokkaido’s snowy scenery from the very first evening. Depending on the weather and light, this first session will be an opportunity to discover the atmosphere of the northern winter and start exploring its vast, minimalist landscapes.
The following day, we will continue towards Biei, where the journey will take us deeper into the snow-covered landscapes that define this region.
-
We will spend a full day exploring and photographing the landscapes around Biei, taking time to work with the snow, light and vast open spaces that define the region.
The day will also allow for moments of image review and editing, depending on the organisation and conditions, creating an opportunity to step back from the field and reflect on the images created so far.
The following morning, we will make our final photographic stops around Biei before continuing south towards Sapporo, leaving behind the quiet landscapes of Hokkaido’s interior for the atmosphere of the northern capital.
-
Our journey through winter Japan comes to an end in Sapporo, before flying back to Tokyo.
Depending on the flight schedule, the final afternoon will offer one last opportunity to photograph the city, review and edit our images, or simply take time to reflect on the journey and everything we have experienced along the way.
On 19 February, we will conclude the workshop in Tokyo, with departures arranged according to each participant’s international flight schedule.
From the streets of Tokyo to the winter landscapes of Hokkaido, ten photographic days across a changing Japan.
